ARTIFICIAL intelligence research platform OpenAI has bought up search and analytics start-up Rockset in an effort to improve the accuracy of his responses.

Details of the figures involved in the deal have not been disclosed, but it is known that Rockset - created by ex-Meta developers, was valued at $86 billion earlier this year.

The company, backed by Hewlett Packard, Greylock and Sequoia with $105 million in a funding round, specialises in building real-time analytics and search databases.

OpenAI revealed little about the reasons for the acquisition other than delivering improved infrastructure to its enterprise offerings.

While OpenAI was guarded in its response to the deal, Rockset CEO Venkat Venkataramani was quick to share his excitement over the acquisition.

"We are thrilled to join the OpenAI team and bring our technology and expertise to building safe and beneficial AGI," he said.

"From the start, our vision at Rockset was to fundamentally transform the way data-driven applications were built. We developed our search and analytics database, taking full advantage of the cloud, to eliminate the complexity inherent in the data infrastructure needed for these apps.

"Fast forward 6 years, rapid advancements in LLMs are enabling a Cambrian explosion and numerous innovations across every industry, driving a preponderance of AI applications. While the nature of these applications has changed, the underlying infrastructure challenges have not. Advanced retrieval infrastructure like Rockset will make AI apps more powerful and useful. With this acquisition, what we’ve developed over the years will help make AI accessible to all in a safe and beneficial way.

"Rockset will become part of OpenAI and power the retrieval infrastructure backing OpenAI’s product suite. We’ll be helping OpenAI solve the hard database problems that AI apps face at massive scale.

"Existing Rockset customers will experience no immediate change. We will gradually transition current customers off Rockset and are committed to ensuring a smooth process.

"I’m profoundly grateful to our customers, partners, investors and colleagues who have been integral to the Rockset journey. Their support and belief in us have been the bedrock of our success. We look forward to continuing what we’ve started at Rockset and supporting OpenAI’s mission of building safe, beneficial AGI."
